A pesar de lo que su nombre pueda sugerir, no se trata de un faro para orientar a los marineros, sino de un monumento en honor a Cristóbal Colón and built 500 years after his landing on the island. It is a mega structure built in the shape of a Latin cross, although with the vertical form of a Mayan pyramid. This mausoleum, which also houses a museum, was inaugurated in 1992 and the supposed remains of the admiral were moved to it. It is an emblematic and essential place in Santo Domingo.
